Helsinki, Finland – August 10, 2024 — Vacuum Wood Tech, a pioneering Finnish startup, has revolutionized sustainable construction by combining advanced wood engineering with cutting-edge vacuum technology. Their flagship innovation, the Vacuum Insulation System (VIS), leverages vacuum technology to control moisture levels in wooden construction elements and extends the lifespan of the materials while minimizing the risk of mold and decay.
With recent advancements, Vacuum Wood Tech’s prefabricated wooden modules are now easier to manufacture and boast a carbon-negative footprint. Each module, which can reach up to 300 square feet in size, sequesters more biogenic carbon than the total CO2 emissions produced during its production and transportation. This remarkable carbon-negative achievement is made possible by a wooden frame design that supports gradual lifecycle extension, enhancing a construction process that is both sustainable and environmentally responsible.
“Today we have a coating solution to maintain vacuum once evacuated inside our wooden modules for over a decade which opens up the dynamic insulation feature for this technology,” stated Pasi Herranen, CEO of Vacuum Wood Tech.
Moreover, by reducing air pressure inside the modules, the insulation level can be increased by up to four times, surpassing even the stringent Nordic standards. This dynamic insulation feature allows the building envelope to act like a thermos bottle, optimizing energy efficiency by adjusting insulation levels based on the time of day and temperature fluctuations.
Additionally, Vacuum Wood Tech has developed an ultra-airtight, transparent coating for its wooden modules to achieve dynamic insulation capabilities. This coating minimizes the energy consumption of the vacuum pump required to alter internal pressures, while also allowing the wooden surface to be showcased as the building’s facade. The coating is highly resistant to environmental humidity, making the modules suitable for use in regions with extreme weather conditions, such as Southeast Asia.
Vacuum Wood Tech plans to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into its systems, enabling AI-driven optimization of insulation levels based on real-time weather data. This would further enhance the energy efficiency and sustainability of buildings constructed with Vacuum Wood Tech’s modules.
