Global pet ownership is surging, with hundreds of millions of households welcoming companion animals. However, skyrocketing veterinary costs have created a significant barrier to care. Recent data shows that over half of U.S. pet owners skipped or delayed veterinary visits last year due to high expenses, leaving many families without reliable guidance during late-night health scares or sudden emergencies.
To combat this growing crisis, Samir Qamar, MD, Founder and CEO of AstroDoc, Inc., developed a groundbreaking solution. His company recently expanded its ASTRID platform to include a free, browser-based Veterinary AI Companion that provides 24/7 health guidance for pets across 65 countries. In this interview, we sit down with Dr. Qamar to discuss the inspiration behind this tool, how AI is transforming household healthcare, and what the future holds for AstroDoc.
Q: Skyrocketing veterinary costs have forced many families to delay or skip care for their pets. How does ASTRID’s new Veterinary AI Companion address this widespread problem?
Samir Qamar, MD: ASTRID’s new Veterinary AI Companion provides accurate information on pet concerns, drawn from vetted scientific sources. The platform is free for anyone to use.
Q: Your platform is completely free, requires no account creation, and operates 24/7. Why was removing these traditional barriers to entry so crucial to your mission?
Samir Qamar, MD: We designed ASTRID to scale quickly at the beginning. No accounts, no sign-up, no downloads, no fees make it easier to do so.
Q: AstroDoc has launched three dedicated healthcare agents in a remarkably short timeframe. How does your multi-agent architecture allow you to scale across medical, veterinary, and dental domains without rebuilding your core infrastructure?
Samir Qamar, MD: Our focus on security, privacy, and accuracy applies to all three domains, and is the common denominator.
Q: You have noted that many health AI companies focus on a single specialty or country. Why was it essential for AstroDoc to adopt a global, multi-specialty model from the very beginning?
Samir Qamar, MD: Not only am I the son of a former United Nations diplomat, I’ve also practiced around the world. People have similar needs when it comes to care regardless of geography. We wanted to build something for everyone.
Q: Dental health is often excluded from mainstream health technology. What specific gaps in the consumer market does ASTRID’s Dental AI Companion address, particularly regarding the link between oral and systemic health?
Samir Qamar, MD: Much of actual dental care requires in-person visits. Our Dental AI Companion offers evidence-based information so people can make better decisions when they can’t get access to a dental specialist. To me, dental health is a part of overall medical health.
Q: ASTRID provides guided symptom assessments and urgency guidance rather than formal diagnoses. How do you ensure the AI complements professional veterinary medicine instead of replacing it?
Samir Qamar, MD: Our AI wasn’t designed to diagnose or treat – those are functions best left to professionals. We complement professional disciplines by providing information in the best way possible, with strong guardrails specifically designed to protect people. AI is in its infancy and can make mistakes. It’s important to recognize this limitation when designing AI tools.
Q: Transitioning from human healthcare to veterinary guidance is a unique leap. What inspired a human physician to build a health tool specifically for household pets?
Samir Qamar, MD: People like to go to one place for care – all care. Pets get neglected due to being a different species, but they’re also a part of our families. Having a sick pet can also impact its human owner’s health.
Q: The Medical AI Companion reached over 65 countries with zero paid acquisition in just a few months. How do you plan to scale the veterinary tool to achieve a similar global impact?
Samir Qamar, MD:
We’re actually now in 82 countries. People using our Medical AI Companion will see our Veterinarian AI Companion as well.
Q: AstroDoc plans to release a Dental AI Companion and introduce multi-language support next. What is your ultimate vision for ASTRID’s role in everyday household healthcare?
Samir Qamar, MD:
Our Dental AI Companion was released a few weeks ago. Since then we’ve also added a dedicated Spanish version of all our companions. My ultimate vision for ASTRID is to have ASTRID serve as a leading source for trusted healthcare information for the whole family, and in a way that’s personalized for each individual. We’ve only just begun.
Our conversation with Dr. Qamar highlights a pivotal shift in how families can access reliable, immediate health information. By eliminating paywalls, app downloads, and restrictive accounts, ASTRID ensures that pet owners are never left alone during a late-night health crisis. The platform’s structured approach empowers users to make informed decisions about when to seek professional veterinary care, seamlessly bridging the gap between home observation and the clinic.
As AI continues to revolutionize the medical field, expanding these tools to include veterinary and dental guidance reflects a comprehensive approach to household health. Platforms like ASTRID are not just lowering the barrier to entry; they are setting a new global standard for accessible, round-the-clock care. AstroDoc’s commitment to providing free, expert-informed guidance promises a safer, more informed future for families and their pets everywhere.
